Tofu cat litter market survey: performance is of concern
Recently, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Committee and relevant agencies conducted a comprehensive performance test and comparison of 20 cat litter products in five types on the market, including tofu cat litter, bentonite cat litter, crystal cat litter, pine cat litter and mixed cat litter. The cat litters involved in this test were all purchased from mainstream e-commerce platforms, with prices ranging from 1.5 yuan to 29.2 yuan per kilogram. The evaluation was conducted through multiple indicators such as water absorption, clumping, deodorization ability and hygiene safety, aiming to provide pet owners with a more scientific purchase guide.
Tofu cat litter is a popular environmentally friendly cat litter on the market in recent years. It is made of bean dregs and emphasizes the advantages of biodegradability and dust-free. However, in actual tests, the performance of tofu cat litter in terms of water absorption and clumping is not satisfactory. The test results show that although its dissolution rate meets the publicity of "instant dissolution in water and flushing directly into the toilet", it performs poorly in the evaluation of clumping strength and durability.
In terms of hygiene and safety, substances such as zearalenone were detected in tofu cat litter, which attracted the attention of consumers and the industry. Although no heavy metals and specific pathogens were detected, the release of formaldehyde and the presence of other potentially harmful substances may pose a threat to cats' health. In contrast, crystal cat litter performed well in hygiene and safety tests, with no harmful substances detected.
In the performance test, mixed cat litter performed best in multiple indicators. Its water absorption and clumping properties showed good performance, especially in dust control and deodorization. It is reported that mixed cat litter is usually made of a combination of multiple materials, which can combine the advantages of various materials and make up for the shortcomings of a single material.
In addition, the on-site evaluation activity also found that pet cats prefer bentonite cat litter, which feels similar to traditional sand, and are less interested in pine cat litter and crystal cat litter. This finding suggests that cat litter manufacturers need to take cats' usage preferences into consideration in future product improvements and innovations.
According to the survey results, the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee reminds consumers that when choosing cat litter products, they should consider the health of their pets, the environmental friendliness of the product, and the convenience of use. At the same time, they should also pay attention to the reasonable use according to the product instructions and clean the cat litter box regularly to ensure the quality of life and health of their pets.
